Choire Sicha Broke His Awl: But Information Will Not Be Denied!
Friday, July 24th, 2009
When we blog de blog blog here we a pick story that is interesting to us of a general nature. But we have our own favorites that we like to check on everyday that are more particular to our sensibility. Websites that let us “be less stupid.”
So this morning when we clicky on http://theawl.com/ to see what Choire Sicha, Alex Balk and several excellent columnists have to say we saw…nothing. UPDATE: As of 2:00pm EST theawl.com is online and only broken as much as it was broken yesterday but more broken than it was the day before.
Yesterday Choire warned he was in the middle of fixing the server problems and he would likely fuck it up. He did!
But as a regular AWL reader, we also get the daily special email ( a love note of sorts) with stuff that is on his mind.
The Awl will be back! But for those who don’t get the super special love note email, we reprint it here:

So yes, I broke my website. It was going so well, too!
It’ll be back… when you least expect it.
I’m actually sort of relieved! Thing is, I knew someone, possibly me, was going to have to explain, in everyday language, the New Jersey Cash For Rabbi Kidney Real Estate FBI Sweep Freakshow. Because apparently no one can make sense of it in any narrative form! The NYT Day Two story was basically nonsensical to me. The NY Post tried to make a graph, which did not help.
Basically I get as far as “This guy got arrested for fraud. And he was like, ‘Oh I know about all kinds of dirty stuff, I will go undercover for you, like on the TV, so do not send me to jail.’ And undercover he went, bribing hither and yon, and THEN SOMEONE WENT TO ISRAEL AND BOUGHT A KIDNEY OR PRETENDED TO OR SOMETHING!”
That is when everyone becomes incapable of explaining.
The Star Ledger does a fairly good job?

Though honestly I am confused as to why selling organs is illegal. (There are probably many obvious reasons!) But also: why do people think some markets should be deregulated and other markets heavily regulated? Why organs, and not debt instruments? At least when things go bad you can EAT someone’s kidney. You can’t eat anyone’s repackaged mortgage.
As many Americans are discovering.
Anyway I should be working on my server problems but I just wanted to say hi and wish you a super nice weekend. It’s Sarah Palin’s last day at work, I believe! Maybe you should send her flowers, for all that she has done for America in terms of wingnut organizing, and all that she is yet to do (AKA kill you all).
OH and also Alex Balk would like you to enjoy this correction from the New York Times today:
“The Big City column on Saturday, about Sandra Fleming, a social worker for the Visiting Nurse Service of New York who visits her clients by motorcycle, misstated a slang term for a high-performance sport motorcycle. It is ‘crotch rocket,’ not ‘crash-rocket.’”
http://www.nytimes.com/ref/pageoneplus/corrections.html
So yeah. That happened!
